I think the thing that makes this part so difficult to comprehend is that we have to understand the "prevailing schizophrenia" that Mukherjee mentions. All of this stuff with cellular biology was going on at the same time that Farber and Frei were trying to throw cytotoxic drugs at cancer cells. And Mukherjee has been saying over and over that what was necessary was to go back to basics to the structure of the cell.
